Listening
Description
People who have visited the town of Shizugawa
in the Minami-Sanriku district often say, “There
are no words for it.” The dead and missing
number about 900. Eighty percent of homes were
washed away. Most of the survivors were forced
to live in evacuation centers. At the Shizugawa
High School Evacuation Center Caritas
distributed supplies and opened a café where
listening to survivors facilitated relationships.
Since the closing of evacuation centers, people
have been scattered to temporary housing.
However, through “mobile cafés” and home visits
Caritas has continued its service of listening.
